Marine production of Salmonids
Species reared
The “star” species of salmon farming is the Atlantic salmon Salmo salar. It is farmed in Europe, but also in South America (Chile) on the Pacific coast. Rainbow trout is also reared in seawater.
Distribution by continent
In marine salmon farming, the proportions grown in Europe and North America are declining while the proportions grown in South America are growing steadily. This shift in balance is explained by the development of salmon farming in Chile. Australasia make a small contribution to world production, Africa, however, is absent.
