Algaculture of brown algae concerns two principle species: Laminaria japonica and Undaria pinnatifida.
China is the main producer of these species, growing 88 % and 87 % of Laminaria japonica and Undaria pinnatifida, respectively. The other countries with significant output are also in Asia, but a small French harvest of 25 tonnes can also be noted in 2005 (Click on the photos or graphs for enlargement).
Algaculture of Red algae
Red Algae cultivation involves three main species, mostly grown in Asia but with a more balanced distribution. Small level production is also conducted on other continents.
